facsimiles of time and beauty

A series of images captured and processed entirely on an iPhone, experimenting with the limitations of portable pop-technology in an effort to demonstrate its viability as a tool for fine art photography.

Each photograph considers the experience of beauty and creative impetus. The images explore Villa Adriana, located in Tivoli, Itally, and capture the moments which best display the variety of architectural influences Roman Emperor Hadrian imported to Rome after his extensive travels to the outermost reaches of his empire. In photographing the remnants of the Emperor’s most aspirational architectural endeavors, I effectively create yet another iteration  — a facsimile — of the beauty which, perhaps, influenced the original architectural feat which so inspired Hadrian.

Rendered timeless through a digital filter on an iPhone, the images visually evaluate the results of the passage of time and reclamation of materia by nature, and allude to our Romantic inheritance. Inspired by the very real beauty of Villa Adriana, and “On Beauty and Being Just,” by Elaine Scarry, this series examines history, the nature of beauty, and our very emotional reactions to experiences of beauty.
